Cutting the initial materials outside on a very cold & windy day (the beginning of my Christmas Break)
Cutting the stairway stringers with a circular saw just made too much dust for the garage.
Daniel really enjoyed taking these pictures. He's quite a little photographer!
Somehow, all this needs to end up as a stairway in a week or two!
Routing the exposed edges.
Enjoying the Ridgid router I got last Jan at the Woodworking show. This was it's first major project.
Construction Foreman Daniel.
Skeleton of the stairway now completed.
Another angle, with the treads test-fitted
Showing off my lovely dadoes for the drawers
Assembling the lower drawer box.
Screw holes filled and ready for painting. Now I need to match the brickwork I did last year on the rest of the bed.
Three different sized drawers
Daniel's mid-construction inspection
Painting the landing / hatch
Painting a face frame for the drawer / riser.
Cutting in the main carcase
Daniel took care of the main wall
Drawer fronts routed & painted.
Looking forward to the "secret" play area beneath the stairs. Here you can see the internal escape ladder.
Trying to remember how this brick detail works. (I actually still had the mixed paint left-over from last year).
Airbrushing the highlights (I learned to do them before the black bricklines from original experience on the bed.)
Highlights on the outer stair wall
Highlights & shadows now finished - ready for the darker mortar lines.
A wide Sharpie made this SO much easier
Starting assembly of the "secret" book case.
Glue-up of the book case.
Starting final assembly onto the bed. (If the bed wasn't dominating Daniel's small room before, it certainly is now!)
Securing the stairway to the bed wall. (Note the red rope-lights around the inside of the bed - also the suit of armor donated by my brother).
Daniel just couldn't stay away he was so excited.
Daddy FINALLY let's him try out the stairs.
Fully assembled and waiting for hardware details.
With the drawers removed again so I can install the slides.
Cramped quarters, but not as bad as I'd anticipated to get the slides lined up right. (Note the drawer pulls have been installed too.)
Installation of the "secret" swinging bookcase. Note the back of the bookcase painted to match the wall identically.
Mounting the latching mechanism (a hidden button beneath the lowest shelf to open the case.
